Working From Home had already become a major trend in recent times and the Coronavirus pandemic has forced companies around the world to adopt it to keep their operations running. Work From Home has its own advantages and disadvantages, which has effectively divided the workers around the world into its supporters as detractors.
You must also be having your own opinion. However, let us look at some of the pros and cons of Work From Home objectively to understand whether it can become the dominant way of working in the future or not.
The pros of Working From Home:
- You will save a significant amount of time, since you will not have to commuted to and from your office. This will leave you with more time to do your work.
- Working from home gives you the opportunity to work at any time that is convenient to you. Many companies are now allowing their employees to follow flexible timings, which gives the employees more convenience to divide their time between official and personal work.
- You will not have to get ready for office every morning. This will leave you with even more time in your hand to do your work, exercise and even sleep a little more.
- Meetings can be done through collaboration software like Zoom, Google Meet and Skype. These can connect you to people across the world in a matter of seconds. So, you can bid goodbye to have to travel for hours and even days to attend a meeting which will only last for a few minutes or hours.
- You become more independent and self-sufficient. Since you or working alone you slowly learn how to do things on your own without depending on others. Once you get habituated to working alone, you will know how to do many things for which you used to depend on others earlier. This is a great added bonus of working from home.
- Working From Home can also enable you to work with fewer distractions around you. Put up your workstation in a secluded place in your home and enjoy working in complete peace and tranquility. Your productivity will also go up since less time will be wasted due to interferences by others.
- Since you will not be spending on travelling, in the cafeteria, etc. you will have the oppotunity to save more money for the future.
The cons
- The biggest disadvantage is that the boundary between your official and personal time vanishes. Since you are working from home your boss may expect you to do things well beyond your working hours, thereby upsetting your work-life balance and sometimes resulting in overwork for you.
- You may feel isolated from the world since your office colleagues will not be around you.
- When you work from home you will have to do many household chores. This will distract you and reduce your productivity.
- You will also have to find out excuses for going out of your home add may start missing office in some time.
- You may have less relaxation since you can no longer take periodic coffee breaks with your colleagues and engage in small conversations with them.
- There are many costs associated with maintaining a Home Office. For example, you may have to upgrade to a high-speed broadband connection. Unless your employer reimburses this cost, your expenses will increase.
