Salary Negotiation Techniques You Can Use To Get The Perfect Offer

All of us feel exhilarated when we finally get the job that we have been aiming for, especially if we had to compete with a lot of other candidates to grab it. However, most of us feel nervous when it is time to negotiate our salaries before getting the final offer letter in hand.

If you have just got a job, then congratulations! Your hard work has finally paid off. Now comes the important part of doing the salary negotiation, which you may find intimidating and difficult just like many other candidates we meet.

We spoke to our recruitment experts at Saty Optimum and got many valuable tips from them. These will help you to negotiate the right salary from your future employer.

  1.  You can always ask for a little more: Many candidate’s make the mistake of accepting the first offer that the HR team roles out to them. Please remember that there is always a chance that you may ask for a little bit more and get it too. However, one important thing that you need to keep in mind is to know how much you are worth and whether your demand is reasonable or not.
  2. Know your worth: So how much extra should you ask for? This certainly depends on what your competencies and experience are worth to the company and the industry standard of compensations being given to people working in the same role elsewhere. This will require a little bit of online research. Once you have done this, you will know whether the offer you are getting is reasonable or not.
  3. Give a reasonable counteroffer: While salary negotiations are always acceptable, it is not right to ask for whatever you like. So, be careful about adhering to the industry standards of salaries and benefits that we covered in the earlier point. Otherwise, the employer might find you to be very costly and may drop your candidature.
  4. Justify your demand: In most cases, your prospective employer will ask you to tell them why you think you deserve a better offer. So be prepared to justify your demand. Make a list of reasons why you think you deserve a better offer, and always link it to how the company will benefit from the unique professional competencies, experience and behavioural qualities that you will bring with you.
  5. Be flexible: Never be adamant about getting the better offer and be ready to accept the viewpoint of the company with an open mind. Otherwise, they might find you to be extremely rigid and ultimately may not give you the offer letter at all.

We have seen a few cases where the employer felt that this rigidity will spell trouble for them when the candidate would join the organization and they rejected the candidate outright. Your openness will help the company and you to conduct the salary negotiations amicably and get you the offer that you have been looking for.

We feel that salary negotiation is an art which must be conducted very carefully, with an open and accommodating mind. Like any other negotiation, it will be best if you can ultimately create a win-win situation for both the company as well as yourself, especially if it is a company that you aspire to join.

Unfortunately, despite putting your best efforts you may not get the better offer sometimes. Even if that happens, do not feel disheartened. Grab the opportunity, do work hard and you will surely get good salary increments and handsome bonuses along the way.
